Research Assistants

The ACWH was originally designed with the purpose of conducting research with higher efficiency. To facilitate this, the ACWH encourages students to join ACWH activities thus assisting them to hone their academic skills and accumulate empirical experience. This consultative case model, which provides students with training in case-based practices, helps students to develop a holistic understanding of WTO-related subjects. The ACWH firmly believes that case-based learning is far more efficient than mere lecturing or other exam-oriented pedagogical methods.

The ACWH’s consultative case model operates by recruiting interested graduate students as research assistants, assisting them to conduct legal research and to prepare draft answers to specific inquiries submitted by the BOFT, MOEA. In preparing the consultative cases, students not only help ease the onerous workload of professors but also hone their professional skills and develop their sensitivity toward WTO issues. In the year 2005, the 28 students admitted to ACWH contributed greatly to the completion of consultative cases referred by BOFT, editing an English-language journal, hosting conferences and seminars, the drafting of research projects, forming study groups on cases adjudicated by the Appellate Body, participating in the WTO Moot Court Competition, and other peripheral works.

The ACWH endeavors to form a unified team through the recruitment of scholars with various legal backgrounds. The ACWH acts as the facilitation point for government agencies and assigns consultative cases to the taskforce with the most suitable knowledge. In so doing, the cases so referred by government agencies may be resolved by a collective brainstorming and mistakes can therefore be reduced. Moreover, the research assistants employed by the ACWH, in the course of assisting professors to handle each specific case, may develop their analytical skills and greater sensitivity of the policy concerns of various WTO Members that so often animate WTO disputes. This strategy comprising of a diverse work-force, the consultative case model, and the case-based learning approach for students, has proved to be a successful modus operandi to maximize the benefits of Taiwan's resources. Statistics indicate that, during 2004 and 2005, hundreds of consultative cases were referred to the ACWH by BOFT, MOEA.
